What is Scoliosis:

For reasons unknown, the vertebrae of the spine begin to bend sideways and rotate causing a "C" or "S" shape. Muscle imbalance occurs resulting in areas of increased stress and sometimes pain which can cause difficulty breathing. Early detection and treatment are key.

It can affect people of all ages and can cause pain, decreased mobility and other complications if left untreated. At Charlotte Scoliosis Clinic, we specialize in the non-surgical treatment of scoliosis using the Schroth Method, a proven technique that helps to reduce pain, improve posture and may prevent further progression of the curve.

What is the Schroth Method:

A highly specialized one-on-one treatment technique designed

to stop curve progression and reduce curvature in adolescents,

and to reduce pain and improve posture in adults in order to

improve overall function and quality of life.

When to Start Treatment:

A scoliosis diagnosis occurs with a 10 degree Cobb angle. The

sooner you start treatment the better your outcome may be.

How is the Schroth Method Performed:

The Schroth Method uses different techniques

to elongate the spine with rotational angular breathing to reshape the torso. Once the patient's best shape is obtained, they learn how to activate their muscles

to maintain their best posture.

The Schroth
Method Helps:

  • Stop Curve Progression in Adolescents

  • Eliminate or Decrease Pain

  • Improve Posture and Body Awareness

  • Increase Lung Capacity

  • Improve Core Stability and Strength

Why Choose the Schroth Method
Over Traditional Physical Therapy:

Scoliosis is a 3 dimensional diagnosis characterized by the side bend and rotation of the spine, therefore needs to be treated with a 3 dimensional treatment technique. Traditional physical therapy is only 2 dimensional. The Schroth Method works 3 dimensionally by using techniques to elongate the spine coupled with a curve specific breathing pattern designed to use the ribs as a lever to de-rotate the spine. Once best posture is obtained, exercises to strengthen the spine are performed. By correcting the muscle imbalances and stopping curve progression, you are decreasing the risk for potential future problems.

The Schroth Method is evidence based and research supported in the success of its techniques and outcomes. Only a therapist trained specifically in the Schroth Method through the ISST or BSPTS has the knowledge to best guide you in learning scoliosis specific exercises.
